Doreen's Story

In verse

Within this choir I’ll have you know
We’re all given a chance to show
How much we love our risen Lord
In verse, song, and spoken word.
We have a member whose duty it is
To choose us to give our testimonies,
And, as my turn came for today
I had to consider what to say –
To you, of all our Lord has done for me.
He first taught me as a child
To turn to Him for so sure a guide
Through all my schooldays ups and downs,
The sisterly squabbles, parental frowns;
I could confide them all to Him
And receive a pardon for any sin.
Later came marriage and daughters dear,
My world’s horizon bright and clear,
But, lurking away, out of sight
Bad things waited for me to fright.
The first of these a fire so bad
Took nearly everything we had.
The strength that came to us then
Was way beyond our mortal ken.
Suffice to say our life went on
And we were given a baby son.
Alas this little boy was only lent –
Such a short wee life he spent
Here on earth
Before rebirth.
Why was he sent our hearts to twist
Never to know his parents, sisters;
For he a Down’s Syndrome child was
And from birth lost to all of us.
Oh, where was God throughout this period
That seemed so bleak and so frigid.
Faith staggers under such a knock
But God is there, an even stronger prop.
Again He says – keep trusting me
And I will ever faithful be.
For me there came another crisis
Shattering my content with rude surprise
When, oh, so very suddenly
My love was taken from me.
My heart stood still, my mind was numb,
My eyes were blind, my voice was dumb.
Only in my agony my tears cried, why, why?
How could I survive this latest blow?
I didn’t and yet I did know –
The love my Lord had for me –
The love He gave my friends for me
All showed me that life still was good
And I was here to obey His word.
My trust in Him He has always honoured
And so glad am I to be His songster.
