�famous for its pier, candy floss and jellied eels, has long been a favourite resort for day trippers from London. It is also a popular choice for family holidays. Favoured by Victorian royalty, Southend soon became a fashionable seaside holiday resort. Over the years it has continued in its popularity with visitors. As well as the normal seaside attractions, Southend now hosts the largest free air show in Europe. This takes place over the late May bank holiday weekend each year. August sees the annual carnival week, culminating with an illuminated procession and switching on of the seafront illuminations.
